UVA Darden’s Dawna Clarke Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
By Caroline Mackey
Dawna Clarke, senior assistant dean of admissions at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, was honored with Poets&Quants’ first ever Lifetime Achievement Award in Business School Admissions.
With nearly 40 years of experience, Clarke has left a lasting mark on the field, having reviewed more than 70,000 applications and influenced admissions at Darden, Dartmouth Tuck, UNC Chapel Hill and Allegheny College.
After 15 years at Darden and a sojourn of successful leadership at Tuck, Clarke returned to Darden in 2017 in response to Dean Scott Beardsley’s offer: “We want you to come back home.”
Under Clarke’s leadership, Darden has held steady in the face of industry-wide challenges, including declines in domestic applications and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, Darden has consistently hit its enrollment targets.
Known for her empathy, Clarke recognized that “the application process can be a highly stressful experience.” Beardsley’s comment that he wanted someone to lead “with heart” resonated deeply with Clarke, who saw the process as an opportunity to bring “empathy, respect and care” to applicants.
Clarke’s innovative spirit resulted in optional standardized tests, challenging the idea that a GMAT or GRE score is essential for MBA admissions. As a result, 19% of this year’s incoming MBA class was admitted with test waivers as Clarke strives for more inclusive and accessible practices.
Brett Twitty, managing director of admissions, shared Clarke’s signature advice to applicants: “Approach the application process with joy and… celebrate all they have accomplished.”
Dawna Clarke’s legacy is one of warmth, innovation and enduring impact, inspiring applicants and institutions alike.
