Four UVA Darden Students Receive Second-Year Fellowships

By Dave Hendrick

Four students at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business on 25 April received an award covering the cost of tuition and fees for the Second Year at Darden.

The presentation of the Frank E. Genovese (MBA ’74) Second Year Fellowships brought the Darden community together in PepsiCo Forum for the annual announcement of the award, which is now in its 30th year.

First Year students who are in the top 30 percent of the class who are interested in working as a general manager or wish to own their own businesses are eligible to apply for the award. This year’s four recipients — Class of 2023 students Emily Corelli, Rachel Hurst, Brian Krentz and Mathieu Philie — join a network of 78 other Genovese fellows.

Speaking at the event, Genovese spoke of the joy in giving back to good causes, and encouraged students to give early for maximum impact.

Recently, three previous Genovese Fellows took up the charge, launching scholarship initiatives of their own.

Genovese has been an active presence at the Darden School presence for decades. An Abbott Award recipient and former member of the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees, Genovese has returned often to lecture in courses such as “Acquisition of Closely Held Enterprises.”

Hurst, who plans to work at Citi over the summer as an investment banking summer associate, said she was “deeply grateful for Frank’s benevolence and am committed to honoring the mission of this fellowship.”

Added Krentz: “I am extremely honored to be chosen by Frank and the selection committee for this award. I am excited to follow in the tradition of Darden students making tremendous impact in the world”

Krentz plans to intern with the biotech startup Evozyne this summer.

Mathieu, who plans to intern with McKinsey & Co. this summer, echoed that he was honored to receive the fellowship.

“I am thankful for Frank and look forward to following in his footsteps and those of the many Fellows before me to support the Darden community,” said Mathieu
