UVA Darden Celebrates Standout Second Year Students at Fall Awards Ceremony

The University of Virginia Darden School of Business community came together on Wilkinson Courtyard to celebrate top Second Year students 29 August at the School’s annual fall student award ceremony.
The Second Year awards recognize outstanding accomplishments in a variety of categories, including marketing, service and academic excellence.
Award Winners
The Samuel Forrest Hyde Memorial Fellowship: The award, considered the highest honor bestowed upon a Darden student and awarded by faculty vote to the student who has contributed the most to the welfare of the School and shows the greatest promise of achieving a useful career, went to Caitlyn Unsworth.
The Second Year student, who also serves as executive vice president of the Darden Student Association, was lauded for her ethical character, kindness, intelligence and empathy, and described as both “confidently humble” and “humbly confident.”
The Hyde fellowship was established by the family and friends of First Lieutenant Samuel Forrest Hyde, a graduate of the UVA Class of 1950 who died in the Korean War.
The Class of 1987 G. Robert Strauss Jr. Marketing Award: The award, presented annually by Darden’s marketing faculty to a student who has demonstrated innovative thinking, the ability to develop unique solutions to real-world problems, flair and charisma in presenting ideas, and compassion for fellow students, among other traits, was awarded to Mercedes Rodriguez.
The Strauss Award was established in 1989 by members of the Class of 1987 in memory of their classmate, G. Robert Strauss Jr.
C. Stewart Sheppard Distinguished Service Award: The award recognizing exceptional service to the School of a nonacademic nature was awarded to King Adjei-Frimpong, Kimberly Diaz and Johnny Mishu.
William Michael Shermet Award: The award honoring students who have demonstrated academic excellence in the first year and provided an example of a constructive attitude and responsible competitive spirit went to 15 students. The Shermet Award winners included:
