UVA Darden Awards $327K in Genovese Fellowships to Top Students

By David Buie-Moltz

A morning cup of coffee at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business became a life-changing event for four students when they were named recipients of the prestigious Frank E. Genovese Second Year Fellowships during a special First Coffee on 22 April.

Matthew Cunningham, Joel Lim, Osama Malik and Richie Todd (Class of 2025) each received $81,700 toward their tuition and fees, a surprise announcement that underscored the transformative power of alumni giving. These awards are part of a long-standing tradition funded by an initial $2 million donation from Frank E. Genovese (MBA ’74), president of Rothbury Corporation, a Richmond-area investment company. Over the past 30 years, the fellowships have amassed $7.5 million in distributions, showcasing the substantial growth achievable through smart investing and compound interest.

During the event, Genovese shared wisdom from his extensive career in investment, encouraging future benefactors to “give as early as you can” to maximize the potential of their contributions through compound interest. His approach to philanthropy not only supports students financially but also strengthens the Darden community by fostering a network of ambitious leaders in general management.

Dean Scott Beardsley lauded Genovese for his deep commitment and strategic philanthropic efforts. The dean also highlighted the significant “ripple effect” of such generosity, noting that many fellowship recipients, inspired by Genovese’s example, have gone on to start their own scholarship funds. This culture of giving was exemplified last year when Genovese Fellow Devin Lert (MBA ’21), along with his father John Lert (MBA ’73), made the first million-dollar gift from the fellowship’s network.

A long-standing figure in the Darden community, Genovese teaches the “Acquisitions of Closely Held Enterprises” course as a visiting lecturer. His commitment is further demonstrated by his membership in the Principal Donors Society, receipt of the Charles C. Abbott Award, and leadership on the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees and the UVA Board of Visitors.
