The University of Virginia Darden School of Business today announced the election of Dr. Donald E. Morel Jr. (TEP ’97) to the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees.

“Don is a talented leader with an exceptional track record who will bring extraordinary vision and strategy to the Darden School Foundation board,” said Bob Hugin (MBA ’85), chair of the board of trustees.

Morel retired as chairman and CEO of West Pharmaceutical Services Inc. in June 2015.

During his leadership, West — which develops and manufactures advanced packaging solutions and complex delivery systems for pharmaceutical and biotechnology customers — was the top performing dividend-paying health care stock on the New York Stock Exchange.

Following completion of his graduate studies in 1984, Morel worked on a broad range of space-related research programs. Morel was selected by NASA’s Astronaut Office in 1989 for training as a mission specialist. He served on numerous NASA scientific advisory committees focused on microgravity materials processing and stability of composites for large, deployable space structures in low-earth orbit.

Morel is a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, a recipient of the Reimann Medal for exceptional service to Fox Chase Cancer Center and a distinguished alumnus of the Cornell University College of Engineering. He currently serves as chairman of the Franklin Institute Board of Trustees and the Fox Chase American Oncologic Hospital Foundation. He is a director of Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corp., Catalent Corp. and Stevanato Group SpA. He is a trustee emeritus of Lafayette College.

Morel holds a bachelor’s in metallurgical engineering from Lafayette and a master’s in materials science and a Ph.D. in materials science and veterinary medicine from Cornell University. He completed The Executive Program at the Darden School in 1997.

“We are thrilled to welcome Don to the board,” said Darden Dean Scott Beardsley. “As an alumnus of The Executive Program, he brings a unique and valuable perspective on the School’s effort to advance lifelong learning as the board helps drive Darden to achieve its full potential.”
