17 September 2014

The University of Virginia Darden School of Business welcomed Emerson President and COO Edward L. Monser, who gave a talk at the School as part of its fall Leadership Speaker Series.

On Tuesday, 16 September, Monser spoke reflectively with students, faculty and staff at Darden about his career path, company and beliefs about leadership. His talk was co-sponsored by Darden’s General Management and Operations student club.

Emerson, based in Ferguson, Missouri, designs products, systems and solutions across a broad range of industries using their expertise in manufacturing and technological innovation.

Monser has served as chief operating officer of Emerson since 2001 and was named to the additional position of president in October 2010.

He handles the company’s day-to-day business operations and leads Emerson’s profit review and other strategic planning processes.

Monser launched his career at Emerson more than 30 years ago as a senior engineer in the company’s Rosemount business unit. After serving in several engineering management positions, he was named Rosemount’s director of technology in 1987. Two years later, he became director of new products and technology. Monser went on to hold vice president positions overseeing several critical operations at Rosemount before becoming its executive vice president and general manager, and then president in 1996.

Active in promoting international understanding and trade, Monser currently serves on the board of trustees for the Eisenhower Fellowships, the international exchange program for mid-career professionals, and is a member of the advisory Economic Development Board for China’s Guangdong Province.

Monser received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1980. He also has a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Michigan University.
