UVA Darden Professor Receives Research Chair Appointment

The University of Virginia Darden School of Business announced that Darden Professor Dennis Yang now holds the Dale S. Coenen Professorship in Free Enterprise Research Chair, an appointment that will last for three years.

Yang joined the Darden community in 2012. He teaches First Year MBA classes on global economies and markets and is developing an elective course on China and Asia.

A native of China, his childhood experiences led him to research the impact of his country’s institutional reforms on economic development and growth. He also examines ways to apply his findings to help other emerging economies.

His work appears in leading economics journals including American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, The Economic Journal, Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of Development Economics and Journal of Comparative Economics.

This summer, Yang delivered a keynote speech on “Changes in China’s Wage Structure” at the first biennial Conference of China Development Studies in Shanghai. While there, he organized and chaired a session on trade and inequality and presented his paper, “The Ownership Structure of Offshoring and Wage Inequality: Theory and Evidence from China.” He also served as an invited panelist at the Conference on Building Data Infrastructure organized by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in August.

Yang received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining Darden, he was a member of the economics faculty at Duke University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The Dale S. Coenen Professorship in Free Enterprise was made possible by Harry E. Figgie of Figgie International and The Figgie Foundation, to support the area of finance.

This position was most recently held by Darden Professor Emeritus E. Richard Brownlee II.
